Good Culture, Terrible HR - UX Specialist Guidehouse Employee Review

Pros

The company strives to be inclusive and supportive of their employees with flexible hours, hybrid workspaces, and helpful benefits. While their internal recruitment needs a lot of work, once you’re on a project the work is good. You’ll have a people manager for your manager. Some of them are useless, but I’m lucky to have a good one. Salary increases have been steady and there are small bonuses you can earn if you’re at certain levels.

Cons

Their HR needs drastic improvement. Most of the recruiters are useless and they treat you like an outside applicant when working off the internal job board. People managers are hit and miss like the recruiters. To the credit of at least some of the recruiters this looks like a problem with their system rather than the people (in some cases). They like to talk about their benefits and how supportive they want to be until an employee actually needs to use them and then they string you along for months.

Pros

I work directly with excellent people. My immediate colleagues are collaborative, capable, and committed to doing high-quality work for clients.

Cons

The biggest challenges tend to come from the corporate side of the organization. Corporate processes and communication can sometimes feel disconnected from the needs of project teams, which creates unnecessary friction. In addition, benefits that were once stronger, including 401(k) matching and medical coverage, have been significantly reduced. A recent example is the increased emphasis on “utilization rates” in merit increases. While utilization is understandable in a consulting environment, tying it too heavily to merit can effectively penalize employees for using earned vacation time and can make PTO feel less like a real benefit.
