Pros
WLB is decent and the ETH office has its perks such as free snacks
Cons
Working at HEB Digital has been the worst experience of my career. During my interview, the leadership made an inappropriate joke about my ethnic name, comparing it to an expletive. It was uncomfortable and unprofessional, and a red flag in hindsight but I needed a job so I ignored this. Despite being told the role involved coding, there was no coding besides for on my own leisure. It often felt like being hired as a chef only to microwave food. While I was told I was brought on to help modernize the space, any effort to introduce better practices was met with resistance. Delivery was prioritized at all costs with little regard for how we delivered or long-term quality. Management style was micromanagement to an extreme. My manager insisted on understanding every low-level detail, often making conversations more confusing and time-consuming. Decision-making was tightly controlled, and team members’ time and autonomy weren’t respected. Negligence was rampant. I flagged a serious privacy issue with a teammate’s changes and explicitly said not to publish them before I left on vacation. I came back to find customer transaction/payment data logged in plain text... Eventually, I sought a lateral move to a more engineering focused team and was accepted but it was blocked due to the minimum time I needed to be in my role for. I planned to move at six months (the required timeframe). A month before my move, my manager asked if I still planned to transfer. I said yes and was let go the next day. When I told HR this was retaliatory, HR cited other reasons like "team fit" but would not elaborate. Despite having documentation supporting my case, HR showed no interest. Why block me from moving teams and let me go if not for retaliation? My experience was not reflective of the HEB values that are often touted.
