Pros

The company is an equal opportunity employer. 3 of the 6 Tax Associates I worked with were between 78 and 87 years old, and 2 of them had been at H&R Block for 25 years or longer. I learned a lot about tax laws and filing statuses. Also, the clients were very friendly and happy to get their taxes done, even the ones that ended up owing money.

Cons

H&R Block has an online scheduling program and people with more complicated taxes can schedule to have their taxes done by a first year tax associate. I had a few clients that came in to see me that were new to the country and I couldn’t help them. Also, there were clients that came to me that were self-employed because they were doing “gig-work”, and I didn’t know how to file tax deductions. Also, while I was helping my first clients, if I had any questions, I had to bother other tax associates. It would have been better if a dedicated tax associate could have sat with me while I completed my first returns.

Pros

H&R Block provides thorough training, and employees should expect to study continuously throughout the season. The training is valuable and helps build a strong understanding of tax preparation. There are opportunities to "level up," and advancing through the certification levels can lead to higher pay over time. Management is approachable and readily available when assistance is needed.

Cons

The position is seasonal, and the starting pay is $12 per hour. During peak tax season, employees may work very long hours—sometimes up to 10 hours a day, 6 to 7 days a week—which can be physically and mentally exhausting. In my first month, I also found that some of the staff were not especially welcoming, which made the initial adjustment more challenging.
