Pros

The people: for the most part, employees care about contributing meaningfully, respect opinions of others, and collaborate well. The culture: work/life balance is excellent, including things like (manager-dependent) working from home, being able to 'shut off' at the end of the day (and not checking email at all hours), and early releases on Fridays during the summer. The mission: what we do has an opportunity to impact a lot of people, and our solutions are pretty awesome. The work: HBP is always trying new ways of working, so even if you're in the same role-ish for a bit, that role will change and expand. You are also in a position to drive your own work; people are very open to input and management generally responds well to people who take initiative, as long as it aligns with overall goals and expectations.

Cons

Career paths and promotions are challenging, because there are a lot of senior employees and people stay for decades. Like lots of other orgs, your role is highly dependent on your manager. Most managers are pretty fantastic, but not all; can be tough to side-skirt a difficult boss. Not an overly social company - people tend to hit the road to the suburbs at the end of the day. Can be very meeting-heavy and consensus-driven, leading to slower decisions in favor of protecting the brand (understandably).

Thank you for providing us with this feedback! It is great to hear that you see the value in our mission and have had the opportunity to evolve in your role. Given the flat organizational structure, vertical mobility isn’t always clearly defined. That said, we support career growth through expansion within a role and encourage managers to work with their employees to identify new opportunities. If you have any additional feedback you’d like to share, please reach out to us at feedback@harvardbusiness.org.

Cons

Extreme disfunction. Every senior leaders opinion matters so that’s 10 different stakeholders you have to account for. Sr leaders are turning more into a mafia than actual leaders. Toxic workplace filled with politics.
