Good place to work, tough place to build a career - Editor Harvard Business Publishing Employee Review

Pros

On a day-to-day basis, HBR is a great place to work. The people are nice and smart (by far the best part of working here), the company’s mission is fulfilling, the benefits are good, and the work-life balance is great. And HBR is a very stable job, which shouldn’t be taken for granted in publishing these days.

Cons

When it comes to building a career, HBR leaves a lot to be desired. It’s very hard to move up and get ahead, there’s little transparency about how it all works, and even star employees can have a hard time getting paid what they’re worth. On the flip side, editorial is small enough that you can probably work on the things that interest you most. Management is happy to let you take on more work (a plus for your résumé), but less happy to pay/promote you for it or to commit more resources to projects. There’s a lot of emphasis on doing things cheaply and on minimum viable products.

Thank you for sharing your feedback. We are happy to hear that you continue to have a good experience after 5+ years. Due to the nature of the business and organizational structure, traditional vertical mobility can be limited in some areas. That said, we support professional growth through increased responsibilities within one's role and encourage employees to pursue career growth outside of their unit by applying for positions in other areas of the organization. If you’d like to share any additional feedback please reach out to us at feedback@harvardbusiness.org.

Cons

Extreme disfunction. Every senior leaders opinion matters so that’s 10 different stakeholders you have to account for. Sr leaders are turning more into a mafia than actual leaders. Toxic workplace filled with politics.
