Pros

For those who have been in the HIT industry for many years, there is no comparison to the type of company Health Catalyst has become. Some of the key qualities include: (1) Confidence in senior leadership, (2) Principle-based culture, (3) Prioritize team members above clients, (4) Continuous education and opportunities. One of the indicators of a good place to work is the tenure of the management team, and HCAT must have an extremely low attrition rate based on my experience over the past 8 years. If you are an "A player" and feel you have the self discipline to drive your own career path, HCAT offers incredible growth opportunities, for both team members and clients. I've enjoyed my time at HCAT, and look forward to many years ahead.

Cons

As is the case with almost every high-growth company, the effect of change is felt in many different ways. Much of the discord by fellow team members has to do with how a company deals with growing pains. Not all processes are refined, or rigor in place to handle every situation. Self-drivers and flexible personalities excel at high-growth companies, so fellow team members who want clear definitions of job descriptions, responsibilities, etc., may find themselves in a chaotic environment. Not everything at HCAT is perfect, but compared to the employers from my previous 20+ years in HIT, Health Catalyst is dealing with growth pains in an admirable fashion.

Pros

Great Talent & Culture: The people here are highly capable, collaborative, and committed to helping each other succeed. The partnership between onshore and offshore teams works well and is a real strength. There’s a culture of grit and stability that has helped the company navigate multiple major transitions over the years. Mission-Critical Engineering: The work involves complex data infrastructure that requires deep technical expertise. It can be demanding, but seeing these systems run successfully and support real-world operations is consistently rewarding.

Cons

Wage Compression and Retention Risk: Compensation for tenured and high-performing staff has not kept pace with the market for specialized data engineering and support leadership. In practice, tenure can feel undervalued or even penalized. This creates risk around losing institutional knowledge and operational continuity. Stagnant Career Progression: Contrary to stated expectations, strong performance ratings do not consistently translate into meaningful, market-aligned compensation growth. The process of how compensation is benchmarked lacks clarity in practice, obscuring how compensation decisions are made and what is required to advance.
