Pros

Great work/life balance. Health Catalyst values their employees and does the best they can for them. Annual base salary increases have been fair.

Cons

Multiple down years in a row leading to declining benefits, consecutive layoffs, and probably more next year. The company is significantly de-emphasizing software in response. Health Catalyst may survive as a company but it doesn't feel like it will be an optimistic place to be a Software Engineer along the way.

Thanks for your review. First, I am glad to hear that we are living up to our operating principles and cultural attributes so you can have a balanced work-life and feel valued. I agree that market realities have been difficult. We have needed to make strategic adjustments that rely on building strong and deep partnerships with our clients that does include significant recent growth in services like tech-enabled-managed-services (TEMS). While we’re grateful to see this significant growth with clients, and we and they recognize the strong ROI and value proposition of these solutions, there is always a “T” in TEMS, and we will continue to need to be differentiated in our technology offerings in order to achieve our mission. We will discuss the dual importance of both our technology and our services to our overall company strategy, including with each of our three key stakeholders, such that I hope you’ll find a bright future ahead for you at Health Catalyst as a software engineer. It’s encouraging to see increased interest among prospects and clients for our technology solutions in our key areas of focus. Thanks for your more than four years of contributions to our success! Best, Dan Burton

Pros

Great Talent & Culture: The people here are highly capable, collaborative, and committed to helping each other succeed. The partnership between onshore and offshore teams works well and is a real strength. There’s a culture of grit and stability that has helped the company navigate multiple major transitions over the years. Mission-Critical Engineering: The work involves complex data infrastructure that requires deep technical expertise. It can be demanding, but seeing these systems run successfully and support real-world operations is consistently rewarding.

Cons

Wage Compression and Retention Risk: Compensation for tenured and high-performing staff has not kept pace with the market for specialized data engineering and support leadership. In practice, tenure can feel undervalued or even penalized. This creates risk around losing institutional knowledge and operational continuity. Stagnant Career Progression: Contrary to stated expectations, strong performance ratings do not consistently translate into meaningful, market-aligned compensation growth. The process of how compensation is benchmarked lacks clarity in practice, obscuring how compensation decisions are made and what is required to advance.
