Not as bad as some of the competitors, but not great - Copy Editor/Page Designer Hearst Employee Review

Pros

Some remote work available, benefits are pretty standard. Occasional small raises/small bonuses — not really enough to match inflation, but a bit better than other newsrooms I've worked in. At the production level, your coworkers will be competent and work well together, and your immediate managers will probably be pretty decent to good to work for.

Cons

I work on the print side of the newsroom, so suffice it to say it's grim and not likely to ever get better. Pay not nearly enough to justify the increasing workload and pressure and job security beyond the short term is dicey. Most of the lower-level managers are pretty good, but once you get beyond the production level, the quality degrades sharply. I would advise people to get out while they can, but if you're hell-bent on working on a print paper, I guess you could do worse.

Pros

Sales team is super bonded over terrible senior management.

Cons

Executive leadership team is not equipped to manage high performing sales people. They mange first year sales reps the same as they manage 20+ years of experience sales reps. 5 members of the sales team have voluntarily walked off the team in the last 2 months and no changes have been made to leadership. Leadership said they were changing our comp plan mid year, but wouldn’t telling us what it was changing to (essentially asking us to sell like normal without telling us what we’d be paid).
