Good company, if you are in the "cool kids club" - Department Manager Heidelberg Materials Employee Review

Pros

At the local level, as a manager, you get a lot of freedom to do your work as you think best. You have to produce results, of course, but as long as you do, the plant management supports you well. There are a lot of small perks that make the job great, if you can get them (see the favoritism comments).

Cons

Management can play favoritism, and so long as you are in the good/favorite group, things go well. If you aren't, you will be stuck watching others get perks while you don't. Want Lehigh to buy you all the lunches and sodas you can eat and drink? Be in the cool club. Otherwise, you are on your own. Want a flexible work schedule? Be in the cool club, otherwise, you will be dinged for being late (even as an exempt). Want to hunt or hike on the ranch property? Be in the cool club, otherwise "there are rules prohibiting...". Want to be treated fairly? Be in the cool club.

Pros

Truly employee-focused culture — the company goes beyond words and puts real action behind employee well-being. Initiatives like Safety Week (offering flu vaccines and mobile mammograms), Payroll Day celebrations, and matched charitable donations make employees feel valued and supported. Long-standing tenure and history of success — Heidelberg Materials has been around for generations and continues to grow, adapt, and modernize. The stability of the company, combined with its ability to evolve with the times, makes it a place where you can build a career. Genuine teamwork — while everyone has their own role, collaboration is key. Departments support one another to reach shared goals, and there is a strong sense of unity. Leadership that listens and invests — management creates space for feedback and celebrates employee contributions, big and small. It feels like a company where every voice matters. Amazing people — colleagues are not only skilled at what they do but also supportive and collaborative. The environment is professional yet warm, making it a place you want to come to every day. Unique perks and benefits — from charitable matching to thoughtful employee appreciation gifts, there are so many “little things” that add up to a truly exceptional employee experience.

Cons

Honestly, none that I’ve personally experienced. Some may say the “traditional benefits” could be enhanced, but when you factor in all the additional perks, wellness offerings, and employee-focused programs, it’s clear the company is very intentional about supporting its workforce.
