Pros

You grow to love the residents like family.

Cons

The yearly raises are pathetic. They did away with the six month raises a few years ago and instead, they give us a small "bonus" in Nov. that is around 10cents per hour worked. This sounds good, except we used to get a 10cent raise at each 6-month mark, which meant that our yearly percentage raise was just little higher. They basically screwed us all out of a few extra cents and expect us to be grateful for the "bonus". The overtime is ridiculous with constant mandates. You have to schedule all time off a month in advance so if you need to go to the doctor, you're basically screwed. They fight you if you need grievance time, and make you feel guilty for maternity time. We are always short staffed, and the schedule is filled to the bare minimum. If you ask for more hours, you get blown off by the scheduler but then get mandated later. It has become completely normal to expect to work a 12 or 16-hour shift twice or more a week. Most of the office staff with the exception of the couple of office CNAs get paid holidays off. Those CNAs are forced to take the day off (without pay) or work the floor. The floor CNAs received two "competitive" raises recently, but the office aides were denied it meaning many new aides now make as much as some of those that have been there for a decade. Staff is forced to deal with residents that hit, say abusive things, and act sexually inappropriate even though they are significantly aware and completely "with it". Administration tells staff "there's nothing we can do" and "you're just going to have to deal with it". Family members are allowed to yell at and belittle staff without any repercussions because the home doesn't want to risk losing any payments.

First of all—thank you for writing a review. It looks like you’ve been working for Heritage for 10 years—WOW! Thank you for all of your hard work and dedication over these last 10 years. We would not be who we are today without employees like you. Having been with us for 10 years, it’s safe to say that you have certainly seen the ups and downs of Heritage. We can certainly sense your frustration in this review, and we’re sorry that the pros list doesn’t outweigh the cons list given that you’ve been with us for such a long time! That said, we’d like to take the time to address each of your concerns. Bonuses & Pay: Heritage has an annual review cycle for employee evaluations. Pay raises are determined by performance, quality of work, attendance and dependability, in-service training, and following Happy to Oblige (H2O) principles. Wage analysis for positions (CNA, Receptionist, etc.) is often not black and white and requires extensive research. The Employee Service Center (HR & Payroll) keeps a close eye on wages and we make sure that we are paying appropriately. Staffing: We recognize that employees need and deserve time away from work! In fact, in our PTO policy, we state that employees must take at least one week of PTO each year to recharge! It was difficult to read your comment regarding grievance and maternity time. Although Heritage employees are family, we completely understand that each employee has a family and life outside of work. Unfortunately, the Nursing Staffing shortage has caused a strain in the post-acute and senior living arenas. Although we’d love nothing more than for our homes to have zero staff turnover, this isn’t the reality. To combat this shortage, we’ve come up with some creative ideas to increase engagement and retention. The specifics of Holiday pay can be found in the employee handbook, but office staff who work M-F would receive regular pay for an unworked holiday if it is recognized during the work week. Residents & Family Members: Our Employee Handbook and Heritage Code of Conduct cover our policies regarding harassment and work safety. We stress that all people should be treated with respect, dignity and courtesy. If you feel you are not being treated appropriately, please reach out to your Supervisor or Human Resources. Advice to Management: Traits to being a great leader would include authenticity and empathy (among others). A leader who says ‘I won’t ask you to do anything that I wouldn’t do myself’ is both authentic and empathetic—and definitely someone you’d want to be a part of the team! At Heritage, we recognize and agree that a great manager shares in his or her employee’s work. Our leaders make every effort to be a part of the team, and we appreciate your suggestion for having them work in each position once a quarter. Thank you again for taking the time to write us a review. If you would like to further discuss ways we can improve, please feel free to reach out to our HR department at jobs@heritageofcare.com.
