Pros

the buy-in program is unique and the bonus incentives are strong. The company also doesn’t do layoffs, which is a plus. The CEO was kind, and the people I met on the chief technical team were knowledgeable and helpful.

Cons

Worst internship experience I’ve had — although a lot of people at the company are genuinely great and were one of the few redeeming parts of the summer. Culturally, I perceived a resistance to new ideas and change compared to other operators I’ve worked with, where initiative and new approaches were not only accepted but encouraged. I also saw a noticeable difference in how interns vs. full-time employees were spoken to by certain people, which was disappointing. Some employees referred to the internship program as “corporate hazing.” The work (especially outside of drilling-focused teams) was less engaging than what I’ve seen at other operators. The company also extended very few return offers. The day-to-day environment felt extremely draining. In my experience, my manager’s communication style often came across as dismissive and belittling, and team meetings frequently felt tense. There was a strong sense of micromanagement, and when disagreements came up, it often felt like team input wasn’t seriously considered. At certain points, the level of dismissive tone and behavior felt excessive to the point that I personally perceived it as borderline bullying rather than constructive feedback. I ultimately left the internship with significantly less confidence than I started with due to the management style and overall environment. The experience significantly impacted my mental well-being and stress levels, to the point that I experienced panic attacks during the internship — something I hadn’t struggled with before and haven’t struggled with since. I wouldn’t recommend this internship if you’re looking for a collaborative, supportive environment — the culture felt highly top-down, and disagreement or alternative viewpoints from non-senior staff often weren’t handled collaboratively.
