Pros

The summer and winter vacations, plus holidays. Great colleagues.

Cons

Everything else. School admins seem unprofessional. They took my 20 minute lunch break to provide feedback if I ate lunch in my classroom. I ended up not eating lunch. They also, instructed a different teaching methods every 3 to 4 weeks. I was given 38 textbooks for 98 students. I recommended teaching from the textbook. They instructed me to not use the textbook because it was for low level learning, even though the middle school students barely knew how to read. They ended up visiting a high achieving school and all that they were doing was teaching off the textbook. Admins also take a LOT of time to respond and implement consequences to behavior students. Also, the school decided to eliminate in-school suspensions. I had no way of keeping the extremely misbehaved students out of the classroom. I had a horrible work-life balance while working as a teacher for HISD. I recommend to stay away from Title 1/ IR schools.

Pros

You get a study paycheck. I had amazing co-workers who where supportive.

Cons

Bad leadership. You will be blamed for issues and problems even if they aren't clear about expectations or mistakes where made by them. Don't expect a fair evaluation system either. I was under 3-4 at any given time. (Part of your evaluation is how much you do for work outside of work hours too.) You will be reminded that you are a salary employee and that Texas is an at will state constantly. You will be awarded leadership programs that if you refuse to to do or are not able to do during your time off will count against your evaluation.
