Cons
I am writing this with no ill intent. Only to bring my perspective and experience. The company and it's culture changed completely over the period of time I was employed at Houzz. Understanding that it is a newer company and there will be rapid growth and more change than a company who has been in business for say, 50+ years. But in my experience and observation, the Irvine office is run as a dictatorship... One person makes all decisions, implements all process and creates/changes every employee's comp plan. "Management" are simply order takers and rule enforcers. They're role is to echo and enforce whatever is handed to them. whether it is practical or not. You have to get every single thing run by upper management, there is no trust in managers or employees. There is no use in thinking outside the box, having ideas or wanting to try something different than the process implemented for you. You will not be heard, but rather you will likely get spoken to by your manager for being defiant. The job is monotonous, there is no difference of an employee who has been there for 4 years or one that has been there for 4 months... Every account manager is offered the same number of accounts and same opportunities. There is also no incentive for high performers. Even if you are consistent, you don't get more opportunity, you have the same number and quality of accounts of the person that is consistently under performing. Your individuality is not warranted. The sales department is slowly crumbling and the compensation was changed 6 times in 2 years. Each time made to be more complicated and essentially less and less money. If you are away from your desk for 10 minutes, somebody will be looking for you. If you are having one of those days where you just can't call 50+ accounts in a day and only get to 20, you will be marked and watched. You might even get a passive aggressive g-chat from your manager! In addition to the above mentioned. I know many people on glassdoor have mentioned that Houzz feels like a family and while I loved most people I worked with. I did not get the family feel overall and definitely did not feel support from my managers. I personally witnessed many of my colleagues experience the same thing. When personal matters happened (sick children, difficult pregnancies, extended vacation request for a once in a lifetime wedding and honeymoon) they are not flexible, they make you feel uncomfortable and they are very passive aggressive. It will never make sense to me when a company portrays such a family persona on social media and in their recruitment videos and then they deliberately treat their employees the exact opposite. Now again, there might be employees who receive this special treatment, but myself and most of my direct colleagues experienced very different vibes and treatment. Look, a job is a job and it does not have to be like going to Disneyland when you walk through the doors for your workplace, there will be good days and bad days and people you love and people you prefer not to be around. But, when people are walking away from good money, with no new job lined up... That says something. Expressing your concerns gets you nowhere, but putting in your notice.. Suddenly they are trying to find ways to make you happy and make you stay. Reactive, not proactive. And I do have to say, some of these overly obnoxious positive reviews are not real... I was personally asked to right a positive review in my first few months of working there. Of course, I did not. But it makes me cringe reading some of them!
