Pros

1) The Houzz platform grew significantly in the four years I worked there, and therefore the brand awareness definitely increased. I liked working for a well-known company. 2) Houzz does a decent job with their hiring. Some of the members on my team were driven, passionate and huge team players- sharing their knowledge and expertise to help the professional development of their teammates/peers. In addition, some of my coworkers became my very good friends who I still keep in touch with. 3) Houzz had some great perks- breakfast on Mondays and lunch on Fridays, snacks in the kitchen, and themed celebrations for holidays.

Cons

1) No recognition for employees who over perform. Compensation payout based on team goals, even though individuals owned their own accounts. This lead to decreased motivation and poor work ethic. In addition, as individual performance was not recognized it eliminated potential for promotions. 2) No transparency. Often times, initiatives were rolled out with little to no warning/reasoning/explanation. In addition, our objectives were constantly changing and the reporting was very limited. Not only were decisions being made very hastily, but there was no data to back those decisions up. 3) Management- those in management positions had no management experience or training, they were simply in the company at the right time to move up. 4) Disconnect between Houzz mission statement "we are a family" and reality of working for this company. When I had a serious medical issue that resulted in my being out of work, I was required to use my PTO. When I returned to the office that same week (out of necessity as I had no PTO to spare) my manager did not check in with me to see how I was doing or to make sure that I was able to work without issue (i.e. being able to type with a broken wrist). I heard so many similar stories from coworkers. It felt to me that Houzz had a lack of basic humanity - requiring employees to come in when they were sick, had sick family members, or other things going on in their lives. To tout that the company is a "family" and then treat your employees like a cog in the wheel felt incredibly hypocritical. 5) To follow up on that point- Houzz had no sick time. This means employees were coming in sick and spreading all sorts of illnesses throughout the office because they could/would not dip into their PTO. As a result, everyone was always sick. 6) The music being blasted on the office wide speakers was distracting, and often inappropriate. Having music constantly blasting did not create a productive work environment. 7) Layoffs- Houzz has had mass layoffs over the last year. Job security is limited. Because goals were based on team performance, high performing individuals who had been with the company for years were not spared.

Thanks for sharing your experience and such detailed feedback. I’m spending a large portion of my time now with the Account Management / CSM channel, and I must say that your experience differs from what the team is telling me. Some of the items are very much on our radar, and we are working on improvements. I can tell you that we have clear objectives and goals, a solid compensation structure, management training and continue to make strides with being transparent and share more of the “why” behind decision making. There is room for improvement, but I believe we are moving in the right direction. Wishing you the best of luck in your next adventure. Joey Nalevka, VP of Sales

Pros

Coworkers are super cool and great to work with. Role is remote.

Cons

Fake, cheesy culture and micromanagement with monotonous internal meetings. AE company meetings feel like a time waste with redundant material coverage and group activity work. Managers will message you if you go 10-15 minutes without making a call. It feels like you're working in a demoralizing call center. Tech stack and CRM are disconnected, outdated, and constantly glitch, preventing productivity and conversation tracking. Reporting is also archaic and not customizable. You're working ~9 hour days with below average pay, and will be encouraged to work Saturdays and be a "weekend warrior!” You are expected to make 600+ cold calls weekly and average 2 hours of talk time daily. If you have PTO planned, managers will ask that you raise your call and talk time volume to compensate for your time off. The calls you're making are from a list of old leads that are either no longer in business, have a terrible past experience with Houzz (please do your research on Houzz - they have ripped off many businesses and provide subpar customer service), rarely show up for your meetings, or have zero budget and "owe money to the IRS." Outreach doesn't feel strategic. From those leads, you're expected to hold ~3 demos daily. This is not a sustainable place for a career, and frankly a waste of your time.
