Pros
The employees at the lowest levels of the organization are really smart and competent.
Cons
Top Executives are not very competent and use resources in any way they please rather than for well thought-out, productive programs. Grantees will always say good things since HHMI GIVES THEM MONEY, but a clear and intelligent vision and efficient and effective operation of the institute are seriously lacking right now. Internal communication is almost non-existent. The right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing, even within the same work group, and employees feel left out of just about every meaningful conversation. Morale is at an all-time low. Employees below the very top levels do not feel valued, and it galls them to watch the leadership having fun and lining their pockets and the pockets of their friends in the field while they do all the work and are treated like dirt. Everyone smiles and pretends everything is fine, but it is killing them to do so.
