Cons

There is a lack of departmental training. It's great that everyone is trained in proper customer service & love of company, but there needs to be more focus on the workings of the particular department one is placed in. For example, I've seen recent hire employees left alone in the department to close, before they know enough to be left alone, which can be overwhelming and intimidating. Plus, it looks bad to a customer when they are dealing with an under-trained employee. COMMUNICATION- is completely lacking. Departmental updates, and info., - items on sale, where items are located-(we continually move product around the store for different reasons), it would be helpful to know WHERE, so we can better help the customer. It seems in the last couple of years there is a BIG concern of employees getting overtime or any extra hours. Consequently, there has been less employees on the floor or in departments. Cutting staff and overtime is cost saving, but at what expense? Customers can tell. We now have employees busting to not only get daily work done, but still having to provide "excellent customer service" and it never seems to be enough. There have been instances of bullying tactics by management to get employees to work faster. I don't know how they think that by bullying, trying to increase production w/less workers, and minimal pay is going to keep people working here, but apparently this is a corporate tactic. ? We have also been told that if we score a less than 70% on a secret shop (which is 2 items missed on a transaction) we are forced the next 2 hours of our next shift to work as a courtesy clerk. I don't have a problem with courtesy work, but I think that basically publicly shaming employees by putting them in that position is ridiculous. The discounts we receive are $1. off Caribou Coffee w/your employee uniform on, and a $5. employee meal. We used to receive a coupon for a cake/ice cream or pizza/2 liter soda for our birthdays, then it went to a $5. gift card, now zero.

Pros

You get to constantly move around the store thru the different departments. Depending on the hours you work you can potentially learn how to do little things within each department, for example the deli or meat counters, which in turn opens an opportunity to get additional hours if needed when AOL doesn't have the business to keep all the shoppers shopping. Hyvee was always very good about giving you the opportunity to help in other areas of the store if your department was lacking hours or business to give you the full 40 for your work week.

Cons

The management/ chain of command often gets a little confusing as you have department managers, assiant managers, general mangers and a director. Often times I felt as if assiant managers sometimes gave different directions then the department manager would give almost condescending what you were told from your direct manager, but would fail to communicate with the department manager this info, causing conflict with employees being told to do it one way and then also getting asked why things were done that way after being trained to do it another way. Basically no communication by your assiant to the department manager causing internal conflict.
