Pros
Good pto, surprisingly modern stack for a large non-tech company, and great location (20 minutes from Portland). Many of my colleagues are talented developers and amazing mentors.
Cons
Poor oversight by management and no standard for promotions/hiring. Developer interviews don’t require any coding and leveling is not consistent across the organization. 3 coworkers with less than a year of dev experience became tech leads or managers and now their teams and codebases are struggling. I’ve seen “developers” who can’t write a simple API get promoted. My manager hired a senior dev that lacked important job requirements, so the juniors and mid-levels are working harder to compensate. My coworker’s manager is toxic and finds someone to berate when anything goes wrong. On the other hand, many people here are amazing. One of my managers was great - he always pushed me forward and empowered me to become a more independent developer. However, the bad stuff has made me conflicted about working for IDEXX. The tech stack is great on most teams, but I plan to leave for a job where my contributions will be more valued.
