Pros

rewarding work, benefits are decent, your direct coworkers can be amazing

Cons

This place grinds up junior staff (Interns, Program Associates, Program Coordinators) and spits them out. It is far too common for this place to hire people with advanced degrees/prior work professional experience in these and other positions, then have the audacity to offer next to nothing in pay. Salary negotiation is completely off the table. In fact, IREX would rather fire and replace you than discuss salaries. On top of this, the workloads are insane, exacerbated by the fact that employee turnover is so high (all that work has to fall on someone else). Thinking about reaching out to HR for help? Don't. Trust me. They are not working in your best interest.

Dear Former Employee, We are glad to read that you felt your work at IREX was rewarding and that you had a positive relationship with your coworkers. We are sorry to discover that you felt IREX did not offer sufficient compensation to its junior staff. As you know, IREX is a non-profit organization and the budget for staffing is determined by donor funding. Each program evaluates its program needs and determines the appropriate staffing decisions according to available funding. IREX compensates all staff equitably and in line with the pay ranges in the internally published compensation structure which is freely accessible to all staff. HR also conducts periodic surveys to ensure there are no internal inequities and that pay is competitive with similar organizations in the sector. Your feedback is valuable, and we will continue to remind colleagues of the role of donor funding and staff budgets as major determinants of compensation. Our leadership team comes from a variety of backgrounds in the development sector and share a common desire to serve others. We will continue to provide the necessary skills and tools to help them succeed as they make IREX a great place to work and advance IREX’s mission. All the best, The HR Team

Pros

Flexibility for expectant parents and parents of young children.

Cons

A few years ago, the organization spoke boldly about empowering youth and championing diversity, equity, and inclusion. Yet over the past 18 months, it has quietly erased every reference to those commitments from its mission, values, and strategic focus. In a bid to align with the current administration, the organization has shifted its focus to artificial intelligence (AI), and its leadership team now reflects the administration's priorities. It presents as very inauthentic when it mutes the equity-driven efforts it once claimed were central to its identity.
