Pros

Nice team who all understood the struggle

Cons

The pressure and stress of my time at IRIS left me physically and mentally unwell. The company says all the right things...they tell you not to work late. They tell you not to worry. They tell you mental health support is there. But what they don't do is anything that addresses the root of the problem. It is assumed that if you work at IRIS you will be overworked and stressed. Never more so than over the past year, where furloughs and redundancies have simply left the remaining staff with even more work to do. Presenteeism is a massive issue at IRIS. People are scared to take time off due to the fear of what work will have built up when they return. I knew several people who were working through work-related mental health crises because they knew time off would result in more stress when they return. We were regularly reminded to use our annual leave, only to know we would probably end up having to check emails and work on those days anyway. Everyone is under so much strain that we all know that it's inevitably only a matter of time until we make a mistake. And we just have to pray it won't be too consequential. Living in fear of slipping up takes its toll mentally, especially at a company so willing to get rid of people at the drop of a hat. IRIS employees are worked into the ground. There is no value placed on wellbeing (a weekly support group is run, but ironically many people who would like to attend cannot because they don't have time. Additionally, a company should probably start questioning things if they have to have a support group at all) and people are tired. There has been no grace given during the pandemic, and despite the extra stress we were expected to maintain even higher levels of output and productivity, even when we were seriously struggling with external factors. I believe middle management is just as stressed and under pressure as the rest of us. And everyone is scared of being the next redundancy. I thought things would improve for me once I left IRIS, but the years of stress have taken a longer term toll. Months after leaving I am still kept up at night tossing and turning about workload and what I might have missed and what the consequences may be. I would not recommend working at IRIS to anyone.

Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a review, although we’re surprised and disappointed by your comments. We work exceptionally hard across the organisation to provide a supportive environment for employees, and we’re very sorry to hear that this wasn’t your experience. We fully recognise the strain that Covid-19 and the associated lockdowns have put on employees in addition to home-schooling and working remotely for such a long period of time – this is a common theme across many companies and is why we have put extensive measures in place to support employees who might be struggling. This includes training Mental Health First Aiders so colleagues can look out for each other, company funded private healthcare which provides free talking therapies and dedicated mental health support, a free Employee Assistance Programme with 24/7 telephone counselling, our weekly workplace support group (which also shares resources and offers the chance to speak to colleagues at other times should Wednesday mornings be unsuitable), and numerous other activities such as publishing guidelines and running workshops for parents in working from home successfully with kids. We also encourage all managers to check in regularly with their employees and offer dedicated HR support whenever you need. On top of this, we offer fully paid sick pay and free income protection insurance so employee can feel comfortable to take time off should they need it. We ask employees to complete monthly surveys to understand how they’re feeling and the responses show that the vast majority of employees feel well-supported and are proud of the mental health and wellbeing support we have provided since the pandemic began. We are very sorry to hear that this wasn’t your experience, and would really appreciate the opportunity to discuss your feedback in more detail – please contact our Chief People Officer (Stephanie.Kelly@iris.co.uk) so we can help. Kind regards, the HR team

Pros

I have been with Iris for approximately 5 months and have been incredibly impressed. The people I work with from my peers, leadership (including executive leadership) and my team, are amazing. Building relationships has been easy as most of the employees are open to it, are very collaborative and genuinely want to help! Iris is also focused on equality and ensure we all have a fair opportunity for growth. While we have a lot to do here, it is clear that we are valued.

Cons

As a rapidly growing organization, we have some growing pains and some foundational processes, systems and flow that need to be updated and/or adjusted, but nothing that won't be fixed over time.
