Poor Decision-Making; Poor Treatment of Employees - Adjunct Professor Indiana Wesleyan Employee Review

Pros

Flexible work-from home hours as an adjunct professor. Great opportunity to work directly with students. Students are often very pleasant and enjoyable.

Cons

There have been so many changes in management that I don't even know who the boss is any more. I used to teach in excess of 20 classes a year (when the full time staff taught less than half of that) and was a respected professor...very highly rated by students and management alike. The pay is terrible - about $1300 a class. When Obamacare came into being, IWU chose to simply cut all the adjunct classes WAY down (ruining the livelihoods of many of their professors) instead of asking who already HAD insurance (for example, from a spouse). That was a pretty chicken methodology to choose - instead of honoring the MAJOR hours that many of the adjunct professors were teaching. They also stopped letting adjuncts teach in more than one program/department - and chose "the first" department that they taught in as "the department that one had to stay with." This became a problem for many, because as particular programs crashed/had lower student enrollment, classes were cut even more - and sometimes the second department still had a need for professors. There were so many sudden management changes that eventually I couldn't even figure out who my boss was. I haven't taught a class there for over a year because they aren't using adjuncts at all in my current department (and they had to lay off multiple full-time professors). Although I technically "work" there - I clearly don't work there anymore. This is not an institution that has its head on straight - or its eyes on the Lord. I consider their insurance decision ungodly and harmful to their previously loyal adjunct professors.
