I never realized the importance of cultivating a great culture until I experienced how brutal it is to work for a company that doesn't care. The lack of empathy from management/leadership is honestly astounding. Middle management all the way up to senior leadership will feign concern for your well-being, only to turn around and dump months worth of work on you and ask you to complete it by end of week. The CEO will message/Slack/call you afterhours, and it'll be an expectation for you to drop everything you're doing (there's no regard for your personal life) and answer him. His lack of empathy in specific means he doesn't think twice before berating you in open forums like Slack channels, pantry pages, and email threads. And middle management, so desparate for his approval, will tack on by liking his messages. I've had experiences with managers across the company who will ghost you, speak over you in meetings, yell at you, make racist/sexist comments, trauma-dump, and withhold opportunities from you. Everyone has their own hidden agenda, and none of it feels like it's in your best interest. It's terrible to feel like even your own manager isn't setting you up for success and doesn't care to. I've been here for a while now and I used to make excuses for the culture, thinking "of course the culture is the way that it is because we all want the company to succeed". But post layoffs, it has gone from bad to worse. Their "values" are a mechanism for them to work you to the bone - and no salary, IPO dreams, or promises of promotion (don't hold your breath) is worth your health and well-being. If you want startup experience, please look elsewhere. There are plenty other opportunities with experienced managers that will treat their employees with respect.
