Pros

Most of the research staff are professional, conscientious people who value great work

Cons

The president is retired on active duty; the operational management - the research staff directors have little to no real authority - the General counsel and finance director have way too much power - the HR director is a political activist with clear double standards for any who do not share her progressive political views - the independent nature of the research is suffering due to lack of mission focus and an un willingness to be objective

Institute for Defense Analyses Response

IDA leadership and staff remain steadfastly committed to the mission: answering the most challenging U.S. security and science policy questions with objective analysis leveraging extraordinary scientific, technical, and analytic expertise. Staff feedback is important to us as we strive to continually improve. We are concerned and disappointed to hear your thoughts regarding the loyalty to our mission and encourage further dialogue to understand examples and context in an effort to fully address them. We seek to empower all staff to come forward with concerns, and can only work to address them when open conversations take place. For any current employees who may share similar concerns, we urge you to share them with us via one of the many available resources, including but not limited to divisional/directorate leadership and code of conduct reporting (see the IIS). IDA’s uniquely flat structure allows for issues to be addressed quickly and at senior levels within the organization.

Pros

Very smart people across a range of STEM disciplines Freedom on what you get to work on Relative lack of office politics Interesting exciting projects available

Cons

Hard to think of a con. Every place has its own flavour and IDA CCS Bowie like anywhere else, isn't for anyone. I'm not positive either way about IDA's budget/hiring situation these days, with all the stuff going on in this general space. It also can be easy to find yourself getting lost when it comes to finding a good project if you are not careful. But even that is a bit of a reach.
