Pros

After working at the IRC for just a few short months you will have experience handling very complex situations and feel comfortable in them. This will be useful when you go to other organizations and they don't normally have crisis issues/complex logistics.

Cons

No one is going to train you on any of your crisis situations/logistics needs. You are going to have to figure them out with very little to no support from your supervisor/manager and with not knowing what resources the organization has in place and what is the role of the organization for these issues. If you fail your supervisor/manager will make sure to point it out to you and still not try to assist with the issue.

Pros

It was a meaningful experience. The NYSA projects felt purposeful, and it was rewarding to create materials that supported programs for youth. The team was supportive, and I had opportunities to contribute to real projects. It was a great place to build experience while making a positive impact. My manager made this internship an amazing learning experience. Even though I was just an intern, he gave me regular, honest feedback and treated my development as a priority. He was generous with career advice, always approachable, and willing to help with anything I needed. I grew a lot professionally thanks to his mentorship, and I'd recommend this internship to anyone who wants to learn from great leadership.

Cons

The internship was unpaid. While the experience was valuable and meaningful, financial compensation would have made the opportunity much more accessible and sustainable for interns.

There's a leadership vacuum at the local level, also layoffs have effected NYC and NJ offices, hurting morale
