Huge Improvements over the last few years - Engineer Iridium Satellite Employee Review

Pros

The company has changed a lot, so focus on newer reviews! In 2016, there was an "in-sourcing" effort, to consolidate all employees under Iridium instead of as contractors. This led to a lot of growing pains, but it was a huge improvement in the end. The company was able to remove the obstacles that were creating bad blood. Compensation is competitive, benefits are good, and there is an annual survey of employee satisfaction that leads to real action. Many of the issues that existed prior to the "in-sourcing" effort have been improved or resolved. The work environment is great for newer engineers. There is a lot of freedom to get your hands in many things. Teams are open to new ideas and radical changes. Red tape is minimal, but people *are* held accountable for their actions.

Cons

This is a smaller company, so moving up within the company will require that you be willing to branch out into new areas. If you specialize in one thing, you will only have a couple of shots in a decade to get promoted. If you want to be the undisputed expert of one thing, go to a much bigger company.

Pros

•They host luncheons quarterly. •The RSU given to us was pretty decent. •Allows remote work if needed. •Host cultural webinars and activities to support diversity.

Cons

•Management is HORRIBLE; they micromanage and hold their team to a standard that they don’t even meet. •The benefits sucked. It’s clear they chose the cheapest coverage to save them money. •They do group firings instead of independently meeting with people to fire them. I was fired via a group call which was embarrassing. •They barely give raises. I worked on a team of 5 and was doing the job of 3 people for almost a year. They didn’t give me a raise till I kept bugging. •We were told that automation would be done in phases and that our jobs were secure till then. We were fired on the spot and these processes weren’t even approved yet. •There’s no work life balance. You’re expected to work when need despite having a family. •PTO sucks. They took away sick leave so now PTO has to be used instead. •They changed the dynamic of the company to benefit the “higher ups”. They don’t care about the employees who make less than 6 figures. •Management & HR lies. They’ll promise you one thing and do another.
