If you refuse to volunteer then they find something wrong with your work and criticize you in front of teammates even if there's nothing wrong with it, just so they can either push you into quitting or rack up enough dings that they can justify firing you. This is after they recalled all their remote employees back to the office - the vast majority of whom had been hired for remote positions!
