Pros
The people, working conditions, benefits, job security, and other perks are pretty good. A lot of people working here went here, or have been here for twenty years, so there's a certain esprit d'Duke, if you will. Genuine interest in the consumer (the students) is the norm, which is good to be around.
Cons
Working for the state, politics and the budget have more influence on your pay than your performance, and starting salaries are low. Because job security is high and working terms comfortable, a lot of people have "settled in," so if the person above you (or the person above the person above you) doesn't aspire to move up or out moving up in the organization can be tough.
