Pros

I was in several roles before leaving JoCo. A couple HR partners are okay, but majority are awful and they rotate so good luck when you lose a good one. The department you work for also matters. I was able to meet lots of employees throughout JoCo by helping with volunteer work within events, elections, committees and being part of lots of training opportunities and that’s where I learned how bad vs good it is department to department. In turn led to my own different experiences between departments.

Cons

The favoritism, targeted bullying, and HR makes this place toxic enough that I had several consultations with lawyers that said I had a great chance of winning a lawsuit over discrimination and retaliation had I came to them sooner. Too much time had lapsed for it to be a solid enough case as it would have been at the peak. After hearing that, it wasn’t worth the fight for me anymore to chance being blacklisted in retaliation. (During supervisor training, they use past lawsuits by name whether JoCo won or lost, to train the new supervisors how to avoid a lawsuit again. This is also mandated training for supervisors no matter how many years you have been in supervisory roles within JoCo or prior to working at JoCo.) I saw way too many people be treated so poorly they needed to get mental health assistance and then were judged by their supervisors/management/department heads and treated even worse for the need of mental healthcare. They just brush it off with the excuse “they must be going through something outside of work” no matter how much someone pleads for help through the issues at work. If you tell anyone in any supervisory role or above that you’re struggling with mental health, it WILL be used against you. So 1. Keep it to yourself 2. Use their EAP 3. Get a referral from your doctor outside JoCo Mental Health in case more shadiness happens between that department and your own. (If you’ve maxed out EAP benefits and insurance doesn’t cover that provider anymore.)

Pros

The benefits are very good and it can be meaningful work.

Cons

There are often high caseloads and leadership can be very mistrusting of employees with little accountability. Some supervisors are appropriate with employees and focused on helping their team do good work. Other supervisors are highly emotional and create unnecessary stress for their employees due to contributing to this culture of mistrust and micromanagement. There was a constant concern of supervisors searching for persons “gossiping” that led to secrecy, employees turning on one another, and took time away from important work serving the community. Career opportunities are limited by what supervisor you work for.
