Pros

Great benefits package, progressive employer that tries very hard to maintain a good working budget and emergency funding so layoffs don't happen. They give raises - even small ones- each year, unlike many other employers. County manager is top notch. Citizens of the county do a great job approving tax mill levies to maintain county government and infrastructure, so county jobs tend to be stable. Training is excellent, including mandatory supervisor training program. Supervisor training program is very comprehensive - all areas are covered, and the training is helpful even when you move on to other jobs. County is also great about offering training in other areas to all employees - there is a library of training opportunities online that all employees can sign up for and attend. Each employee has to get a certain number of training hours annually anyway. It is great - training is the best investment. Benefits like health care are good, and county pays a decent portion, tries to keep employee premiums as low as feasible plus offer good options. Hires quality people and promotes from within whenever possible. Quality workplace. I should never have left.

Cons

If you get sideways with a supervisor, or wash out of a training program and need to return to a previous position, your chances of promotion or transfer to a different department are pretty much screwed for a goodly while. Some departments are notoriously understaffed (i.e. juvenile detention) and so run up a lot of overtime - some of it mandatory and not convenient for life. There is a lot of bureaucracy, but typical of any government job. Always at the mercy of the taxpayers.

Pros

The benefits are very good and it can be meaningful work.

Cons

There are often high caseloads and leadership can be very mistrusting of employees with little accountability. Some supervisors are appropriate with employees and focused on helping their team do good work. Other supervisors are highly emotional and create unnecessary stress for their employees due to contributing to this culture of mistrust and micromanagement. There was a constant concern of supervisors searching for persons “gossiping” that led to secrecy, employees turning on one another, and took time away from important work serving the community. Career opportunities are limited by what supervisor you work for.
