Not horrible, not great either. - Manager In Training (MIT) Journeys Employee Review

Pros

40% Discount on shoes for yourself (ability to share it with friends and family if in Sales Lead or higher position). Potentially gaining experience with retail, learning customer service. Okay-ish side job if you need spare spending money. Weekly Pay. Standard benefits.

Cons

They do not talk about pay and while you are given the option to ask what rate of pay you want, it almost always has to get sent to upper out-of-state management to get approved. Pay is not great regardless of the position even if you work well / perform well/ work for a long time. It is NOT Enough IF you are attempting to make bills. It also isn't ever fully explained properly once you go into higher positions. For the commission earnings employees they say you “can make your paychecks as big as you want” this means you WILL have to be constantly attending to customers and trying to push to make huge transactions, (on top of trying to make sure you keep your metrics up with selling additional categories of items for you and the stores metrics which isn't always possible regardless of how good your customer service is) that doesn't ever seem to be much actually added onto your paycheck. Trying to negotiate higher pay for starting with the job is next to impossible, unless you've been scouted for a position and they really actually want you. Most “employee recognition” feels like an “atta boy/girl”, you are expected to drop everything to tend to customers, which while not inherently bad you are effectively jumping down customer's throats trying to sell them additional items. How it's taught comes across as very harsh and can make you and the customer feel uncomfortable, especially more so if the customer just walked in. Which can be difficult especially for someone with next to no previous experience with retail in general. Previous experience with other similar style jobs doesn't seem to ever be taken into account / acknowledged unless you were scouted for specific reasons.

Pros

- Diversity & inclusion throughout employees - No dress code (other than inappropriate clothing obviously and occasional Journeys t-shirts during holidays) - Paid training - Flexible schedule (at least at my store)

Cons

- Horrible corporate mentality - Only the sales leads and above work on commission even though every employee has to HARD sell - Sales goals that are unrealistic and based off of the previous year's numbers - Little to no benefit for reaching or surpassing the ridiculous sales goals - District managers and corporate employees who say you're not good at your job unless you practically beg customers to buy socks and multiple pairs of shoes even if they came in knowing exactly what they want (to the point of annoying the customer) - Verbal, then write up, then immediate termination if you don't meet or surpass EVERY single category in your MPR (monthly progress report) - District managers who demote the best managers and transfer people to other stores with no say in the matter, as well as letting certain bad managers get away with things without reporting it - lowwwww pay for what is expected of the employee
