Government job. Steady, but boring, with lots of red tape - Senior Public Relations Manager Kentucky Community and Technical College System Employee Review

Pros

It's a steady job, working for state government. There was a nice benefit of extra time off during the Christmas holidays.

Cons

Lots of red tape. Took 18 months, or longer, to accomplish even small tasks, such as organizing an event, due to all the signoffs necessary. The marketing department is also a world unto itself within the organization. Raises never occur, because of cuts in state funding. So get the salary you want to start with, because it won't increase unless you get promoted from within, which is rare.

Pros

Co-workers are awesome. You genuinely do some good for the community by educating a diverse array of engaged students. That's about it.

Cons

Admin expect you to do well over 100 hours of interval service, external service, and elective PD in your first year on top of a massive slate of an utterly useless new faculty program. All of this as a brand new faculty member just trying to get your feet under you will drown you while you get paid about $10,000 less than if you'd just gone to teach at the local high school. You'll also be expected to learn how to advise students outside of your area of expertise with an archaic program that Satan himself created: PeopleSoft. Higher-ups tend to ignore serious faculty council concerns and everyone just kind of shrugs and resigns themselves to concerns being addressed as quickly as molasses in winter, if at all.
