Pros

Having formerly commuted to Westchester and Fairfield County, CT for many years, I was thrilled to find employment with a local company that offers an outstanding work/life balance, great benefits, fair compensation, and management that truly listens to their employees. There's a reason why this is the second time LBM Advantage applied for and won Best Companies to Work for in New York". Working for a non-profit, one might expect that benefits would be slim, however; since joining the company less than two years ago, I've seen employees enjoy multiple random bonuses during business highs, new policies that allow for a weekly work-from-home day, the addition of floating holidays, free monthly lunches when we beat our budget, extra dress down days (Friday dress-down is already in place), Employee Appreciation Week (yes, you read correctly - it's week, not day!), lovely holiday parties complete with prize giveaways, and social outings that allow for the attendance of family members. As a manager, I've also had the benefit of twice-yearly leadership training that has allowed to me develop professionally and I am told when I do a good job. It's the first time in my career that I truly feel appreciated! To top it all off, you get to work with a genuinely nice group of people. Staff at Advantage would truly give you the shirts off their backs as would the executives and employees from our member organizations. Working for one of the nation's largest member-owned lumber and building cooperatives, it's gratifying to know that you are working towards the common goal of keeping independently owned lumberyards and home centers in business so that they can continue building communities.

Cons

Some technology could be updated, but there is an acknowledgment of this and steps are being taken.

Pros

Excellent pay and longevity for those who play ball.

Cons

The good ol boys club is rampant with very little opportunity or respect for women or people of color. You’re either with them or against them. Most of the long term employees just keep their heads down and collect a paycheck as any complaints are ignored and anyone who steps out of line is labeled a troublemaker and is swiftly removed. Then there is the horrific rumor mill where all manner of false information is circulated endlessly causing reputations to be tarnished as well as bullying and a hostile work environment.

Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback on our workplace culture. We take comments of dissatisfaction seriously as it has always been LBM Advantage’s goal is to provide a safe, comfortable, and inclusive environment. We are also deeply committed to taking legitimate grievances seriously and employees who present issues to HR, our C-suite, and management team will never be ignored. When issues are brought to our attention, a thorough investigation is always involved, and decisions are made based on factual information. LBM Advantage has a history of having very long-term employees and as evidenced by the staff survey findings from our NY State Best Companies award, staff have an overall 89% satisfaction rate. It is rare that employees are released from our organization, and on the rare occasion that we have terminations, it has been related to performance or misconduct, and never due to labeling or rumors. In fact, our Executive team has adamantly discouraged gossip and worked closely with our management team to ensure that unconstrained conversation is kept at bay and positivity and collaboration are a key focus. Maintaining teamwork and building morale is one of many reasons LBM Advantage started their annual Management Leadership conferences. While HR and our Executive team welcome further discussion about the issues you have addressed, if you would prefer to work outside of the internal management team, we would encourage you to reach out to the LBM Advantage Board of Directors to share your concerns and find solutions.
