Great place to work if you want to have great-work-life balalnce. Poor choice if you are very career-focused. - Computer Scientist Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Employee Review

Pros

The work-life balance is excellent, a really good choice for those with small kid or time-consuming hobbies. The pay is very competitive except at higher levels of management. Also, the ability to make career changes or explore new areas is pretty good. There is (always will be?) a "unfair" focus on Physicists and Ph.D.s (so if you are one or both of those, sign up).

Cons

Leadership is poor; these is no vision. Sadly, even if there were nothing would happen-- high risk ideas are no longer resourced. Even low-risk high payoff ideas are nickel and dimed.

Pros

Great benefits, stimulating environment to learn and grow scientific career. Great work-life balance: those who do work a bit more are insulated enough that there isn't endemic pressure to follow suit.

Cons

There could be better incentive structures for research output or getting funding. Monetary, for instance.
