Pros

Interesting technology, kept CAD tools up to date (while business was good), good benefits. Some good co-workers. Somewhat flexible work hours including 9/80 work week. No security clearance needed although this was a defense industry company. Good separation package when I got laid off.

Cons

Only way to advance/get bonus/good merit increases was to work 50 - 60 hour weeks always or play the political game with management. Aggressive management techniques including lead engineers throwing their team under the bus when the lead failed to do his job. Company has drastically downsized and is now combined with their optical division which does not understand the rugged computer market. This lead to a Us vs Them work environment. The tactical systems side is now struggling to stay alive and has lost critical mass to take on large projects. Employee retention is a big problem.

Pros

The only Pro with this company was having every other Friday off.

Cons

Poor leadership and management culture. In my experience, management positions are often filled from a small, long-tenured group, resulting in limited diversity of thought and few opportunities for outside perspectives. Many leaders lacked the skills needed to effectively develop, mentor, and support their teams. Rather than addressing organizational issues, accountability often seemed to flow downward, with lower-level employees bearing the consequences of management decisions. I also observed talented Program Managers leaving or being terminated under circumstances that suggested they were being held responsible for broader organizational problems rather than receiving appropriate leadership support. Overall, the culture discouraged transparency, accountability, and professional growth.
