Pros

The kids! That's it, really.

Cons

- The programs. Seeing Stars is their most reliable program, but it's based almost completely on bottom-up reading (phonics, memorization) and very little on using comprehension and top-down methods (which is what ALL current reading research supports). VV doesn't work and OCN is a joke. - Nancy Bell's husband is the head of R&D. They have about 1 "real" research study which focuses on a change in gray matter volume in the brain. No longevity studies following students who have completed the programs, yet they've been around since the 80's. I wonder why? - Very fake culture. - I was promoted a lot, very quickly. I naively took the promotions and at the end was making a great salary but felt horrible about my work (selling these fake programs to desperate parents for an unreasonable amount of money (tens of thousands per summer). For the vast majority, this will be a summer job and you will have no career opportunities. - CRAZY turnover. They basically hire all new teaching staff every summer. As a parent, this should concern you. Your child's teachers are almost always going to be brand new and overworked.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Lindamood-Bell. We take comments like yours into consideration when reviewing training and communication materials. While we appreciate your candor and personal perspective we are compelled to clarify a couple of the points in your review. Every year, seasonal clinicians help Lindamood-Bell meet the needs of students during their summer break. During their time at Lindamood-Bell, seasonal clinicians are paid to learn and implement the steps of our evidence-based approach. Our most experienced year-round staff diagnose, write lesson plans, pace, and more. Seasonal clinicians are offered a role with a set start and end date. We will also address our evidence-based instruction and results. Neurological and behavioral research by parties unrelated to Lindamood-Bell, as well as controlled studies by a variety of university research programs are the validation of Lindamood-Bell instruction(https://lindamoodbell.com/category-article/indirect-outside-research). Our instructional quality teams ensure consistent application of our programs throughout our Learning Centers and Lindamood-Bell Academy, our accredited school. Lindamood-Bell may not be a right fit for everyone, but the positive effect of our approach on student lives should be evident to all. We will continue to improve on how well we help staff understand what they are doing and why. Thank you again for your review.

Pros

It’s great to try to help people, but…

Cons

They’re so set on their particular philosophical style, but realistically, it cannot be one size fits all. Clinicians who work there are NOT experts; they only get two weeks of training. And the sessions are extremely tight, with back-to-back students (just five minutes between each, leaving no time to prepare for the next one and no chance for clinicians to catch a breath). Lessons take place in cramped, mostly shared spaces, so everyone tends to be over-stressed. There’s no way that what is taught there, and the environment in which it’s taught, is worth what they’re charging families. Not to mention that the staff break room is like the size of a closet, and even in that tight space, many people just aren’t very friendly and hardly acknowledge your presence.

Thank you for sharing your experience with Lindamood-Bell. We appreciate that our mission of helping students reach their learning potential resonated with you. At the same time, we are disappointed to read your comments regarding training, scheduling, and your experience with our instructional model. Our initial training is designed to prepare clinicians to begin working one-to-one with students using our unique approach. That training continues through ongoing mentoring and instructional guidance from experienced staff members who oversee lesson planning, monitor student progress, and support instructional quality. This team-based model is central to our instructional approach and to supporting student outcomes. We regret that the purpose and value of this model were not evident during your employment. We also recognize that learning center work can be demanding, particularly during busy periods, and we appreciate your perspective regarding scheduling and the work environment. Feedback such as yours is valuable as we continue working to improve communication and the overall staff experience. Thank you again for taking the time to share your thoughts. We wish you all the best in your future endeavors.
