Oh, where to begin? Multiple people who have now left the company, including myself, are coping with repercussions of working for unsteady, unfair, and unethical leadership. This includes workplace trauma that manifests itself years later, PTSD, and other mental health issues stemmed from problematic leadership at this company. On paper, working for Faithlife looked really good. Unlimited vacation? (Spoiler alert: it’s not.) flexible working hours and WFH options before it was the norm? (Also, no.) A collaborative and healthy environment where there is growth opportunity? (Um. Nope! We’ll get to that.) In reality, Faithlife is a company attempting to hold on to the startup vibes when it is way beyond that. Because of this, it’s hindering itself and its employees. One of the biggest concerns was the lack of HR/“employee services” as a functioning department. Because of the lack of this functionality, there were so many issues that we’re simply not okay and never properly addressed. I witnessed inappropriate jokes, threats, verbal abuse, blatant sexism, and blame placed unfairly. Departments were also prioritized over others. For instance, some revealed that Dev salaries were significantly higher than Marketing. This caused a lot of tensions when underfunded departments were told that “there was no money for raises” and that they should be grateful to get 2-3% as top performers. The lack of transparency regarding salaries is alarming and caused a lot of grief. Faithlife had layoffs in 2015 that left a negative lasting imprint on those left behind. Lots of employees operated off of the fear of being let go unexpectedly, and management did little to attempt to quell that culture. I have heard from others that the culture has progressively gone downhill since the CEO was asked to step away. I have also seen a large percentage of my former colleagues choose to leave. There was also an overarching fear of retaliation for speaking out. So, I’m glad to see that people are beginning to be transparent about their experiences. A lot of us had a tough time working here.
