Pros

Working with an incredibly diverse student body, and some professors who are brilliant at what they do and (more importantly) truly care about their students.

Cons

This institution is morally repugnant, and failing in every possible sense. This university has always had problems, but it's taken a serious downturn. The pay and benefits have been cut from everyone -- faculty, administration, security, etc. The university operates with utter disdain for the students and faculty alike. Morale is at an all-time low. The goal of management is to break all the unions. They locked out the faculty union, the first time in higher ed history it has been done. Furthermore, many people have been fired, three positions have been "consolidated" into one, etc. The result being that people are overworked, and entire departments are starting to fray. My department has replaced the secretary with students on work-study. They have also gutted financial aid, including financial aid for veterans. Scholarships have been cut, as have graduate assistantships. The result is a dying enrollment, increasing student resentment, and a steady loss of the better performing students. Those with options have been leaving or not attending. Those without are not being offered the support they require or are promised. During tours, the students are told they will have an advisor throughout their time at LIU. The reality is that they got someone with minimal work experience and no knowledge of the student's major for six to nine months, since that is the average turnover of the "promise coaches." To add further insult, incoming students are not told their financial aid package until they enroll for class. So the only way to know how much it costs to go to LIU is to commit. I would be surprised if it is still a university in five years.

Pros

Always something new to learn.

Cons

Working here became increasingly frustrating because expectations often changed without notice and communication was inconsistent.
