Cons
a student retention rate is ~30%; this tells you a lot about the school. Faculty quality is very low at least in liberal arts. A lot of dead wood. They are barely hiring new faculty. School requires 5 publications to get a tenure without adjustment for quality. Research support is almost ZERO. An individual faculty has no research budget for his/her disposal. Department budget has been cut to such extent that there's barely money for paper and photo copier. School is obsessed with Outcome Assessment, which is a complete waste of people time. Facilities are deteriorating; no money on basic maintenance. Moral is extremely low after a new president has been hired in 2012. She has been firing people left and right. Lack of transparency within an organization; president and administration keep everything opaque so nobody can be hold accountable, e.g. organization structure is kept secret by the president. Bureaucracy, inefficiencies, and corruption is wide spread, e.g. there is a committee on committees, entire families of higher rank officials (Provost, Dean, etc) are employed by LIU. LIU is an example of how a university should not be run. School is in a deep financial trouble and I really can't imagine how they will survive another decade or two.
