Pros

Very in-depth projects. No dull days. The abundance of clients and projects make each week a different week. There are not a lot of dull days. The staff is generally extremely intelligent and very invested in their work (almost to a fault). They have sports games at lunch (soccer, basketball, frisbee). Benefits are pretty middle of the road. Decent amount of community involvement. Hardcore, in-depth science is the motto here. If you eat, sleep, and breath pharmaceutical sciences this is your place. You will be given a free reign to explore new things, push boundaries, and it is a very open communication company. Top to bottom you can talk to anyone about problem statements and project outlook. Bend is also a great place to live. Lots of fun, smaller town atmosphere with lots to do. Outdoor recreation is abundant.

Cons

The culture has changed for the worse since the acquisitions. It started with Capsugel and has continued to slide downhill since Lonza. The earlier days of Bend Research pushed hard for a work-hard, play-hard lifestyle. This has disappeared since the buy-out and revenue has been the top priority since. Be prepared to work every week 40+ hours and don't expect any compensation for your overtime (weekly or at the end of the year). Raises are only cost of living (~2%), maybe 3-4% if you are a top 1% of the hardest workers and routinely work 50+ hours. There has been significant turn over in the past 3-4 years. Expressing concerns to HR is also a grey area. They are very obviously only there to protect the company, be cautious with expressing any concerns you have at work about work. If you love science, enjoy working hard, and don't have a lot of priorities outside of work, this is your place.

Pros

Lots to learn about producing API's via fermentation in bioreactors. Lots of room for career growth towards other departments and positions, from the business to the research. Good pay and lots of benefits are offered, such as dental, vision, and medical insurance; they also have a weight-loss program that I'm taking advantage of. Quality is prioritized, so there is no pressure to learn quickly, work faster, or meet quotas to do a good job. Teams are reliable, especially when learning the ropes; they'd be a part of the job I'd miss most if I leave.

Cons

Take careful consideration and be transparent with the supervisors if you're still exploring, as it's not an entry-level job that can hire and train new people at a fast pace all the time (I'm comparing this to retail and fast-food places, though). I live an hour away and work night shift, 7 pm to 7 am, thus the total amount of hours away from home is 14 hours. Please consider your mental endurance as well as your physical endurance for the night shift, as this job requires you to be on your feet, think critically, and can challenge one's work-home life balance.
