Pros

-Great retirement package (Has a pension plan in addition to a 457 retirement plan) -Free retirement medical insurance when you work there after 25 years (not medicare). -Great medical insurance coverage w/ Kaiser (very low co-pays vs other hospitals that also offer Kaiser). -You get a benefit allowance where anything extra goes into your paycheck. -Career advancement is good. -No cancellation of shifts/sending staff home due to overstaffing (if the unit is overstaffed, the unit is overstaffed). You are guaranteed your hours. -Some units able to self-schedule. -10/10 new hire program. (Everyone is required to attend the new hire program which includes new grads and people with experience so that everyone gets oriented properly into the hospital. They don’t just “throw you in” with a random preceptor as well, they would pair you based on your personalities. If you get hired into ICU, before you even go to the ICU program, you have to go through the medsurg program for a couple of months.

Cons

-Not everyone gets benefits right when they get hired. You get categorized either as an A item (gets full benefits right away starting Day 1) or an F item (which doesnt earn hours except sick time just yet, and medical/dental insurance comes 3 months after). -Since everyone has to go through the new hire program in medsurg even if you are ICU trained at a different facility, this can be a con for nurses with tenure considering you would have to start again in medsurg for about 3-6 months before you go into the ICU program which is about another 6 months. -Low hourly rate for nurses to compensate for all the great benefits. -Union is ok, not that great.

Pros

Great place to learn as a nurse and serve the community. Generally good camaraderie amongst staff. Good job stability and good benefits despite lower hourly pay than other top hospitals in the area.

Cons

Things are tightening up with ongoing reports of the "budget crisis." The working environment greatly varies by manager. You don't pay into social security, so many staff who work many years at the county feel "handcuffed" here because of the retirement benefits.
