Pros

The LATimes was probably the best newspaper in the country for a reporter/writer at one time. Editors gave wide room to accomplished writers and, if lucky, a writer could pursue a good story for many months. It was a fun, supportive, creative, and ambitious place.

Cons

Sadly that has changed over the last decade, through ownership and leadership changes, bankruptcy, and overall decline in the industry. Most of the senior writers have left. Sure, there was a lot of fat at one time, but now the place has gone to the other extreme.

Pros

The management was supportive and responsive. I never had any issues.

Cons

It is a far commute for those who are remote and need to work in the office.

Pros

Good focus on long-form writing and journalism; lots of lovely people worked here and there was a nice community outside of the office; felt like a legit civic institution that people in L.A. care about.

Cons

Uneven management with unclear long-term priorities and conflicting top-down mandates. Not very willing to collaborate with the union.
