Pros

Good pay for a student. You learn a lot about home improvement. You aren't doing the same thing all day. If you have some cool people in your department you can have a lot of fun. (when I had fun coworkers and the store was dead we would goof off, management was cool/didn't care as long as you took care of customers when they came in)

Cons

You sometimes have to put up with low life people (probably not as bad as home depot) You sometimes have to put up with low life co-workers/managers There are really several bosses for everyone. Your department manager, team-leader (really your coworker but can sometimes pull rank if they want), and rotating managers on duty for the store. The chance you'll have a boss you really don't like is really high. Overall, my advice is each store has its own culture. When I worked at a different store cause I lived on campus as a student, I was treated a lot differently than my old store (even though I was the most knowledgeable, hardest worker in my department). I would only work here if you are student wanting some good pay, or retired person looking for something to do (sometimes they were the coolest people to work with, and you are given more respect than the student worker) If you want to move up, you have to switch department a lot to learn everything in the store. Or start as a cashier and your chances of being promoted faster is better than someone in a department. If you want money, do a department where you get commission (appliances, flooring, etc.) Overall, be mindful of the culture you are getting into.

Pros

Some amazing customers and coworkers. Tasks and systems were easy to learn. Sometimes you get lucky and have amazing ASMs and SMs. It's easy to get a good survey when you treat customers like friends, be honest about what you do and don't know, and work to learn what you don't. That goes a long way with customers. I personally truly loved my job and loved spending as much time as I could at work.

Cons

Once you are on someones S*** List they will make it possible to get rid of you. Management only follows policy when it benefits them. Some people get promoted when they have no business working in retail as a leader. The A/C in the store I worked in was always broken during the summer, which made it miserable to work. Some customers are entitled due to they way management will kiss their butts to keep from losing a sale or getting a bad review. Management will make a paper trail to write you up if you mess up or are struggling instead of helping you better yourself. Management does not care about employees' work-life balance. Management does not care if their employees are struggling with personal issues like car troubles, health issues, financial issues, etc. Management will get rid of great employees but keep people who don't pull their weight. Once I hit burnout, instead of helping me, I was punished by my managers. In turn making me hate a job I truly loved.
