Pros
If you're a self-starter and don't need supervision on contract, you will be left to get the job done. Just pick up the phone when you need help. I worked on contract, not overhead, so I kept the money coming in and they left me to get the job done.
Cons
When the contract, as all government contracts do, ends, you had better be thinking ahead and talking with your supervisor. He/she may have a "squeaky wheel" type that keeps just enough positive attention to put you in a bad spot if the contract goes elsewhere. That's the life of a government contractor. Consistency in work may come with a few changes of project or company. But you can easily put in 15+ years and experience way more cool work than people who specialize in whatever...
