Pros

Great students, faculty and staff to work with, a very talented but unaffected group of people for the most part. This is a community of people who like to solve problems. Students are quick learners, and that is true with practical and professional skills as well as with intellectual skills.

Cons

If you want to work with students from a broader liberal arts background, there is a relatively small proportion of students majoring in those fields here. This is primarily a STEM community. I thought initially that could be a problem for me, but it has not been at all. Liberal arts skills are in evidence in electives and in student activities, and the students are great.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
