Pros

The research environment is dynamic with opportunities for collaboration. No shortage of interesting speakers and events at the University, and it is an exciting place to be based as a scientist.

Cons

Graduate student funding can be difficult to secure and the bureaucratic system may be challenging at times to navigate. Graduate student stipends are fair by national standards, but inadequate relative to the high cost of living in the Boston area.

Pros

High quality core facilities and well resourced labs. Countless brilliant colleagues who can serve as mentors and collaborators

Cons

Students and Postdocs are expensive due to high overhead, so unreasonably high productivity is often expected compared to other institutions. PIs are typically stretched very thin. Most departments/labs are very space limited which makes it harder to do safe and productive research.
