Pros

- very large - there are many (on the order of 100) groups to choose from - if you don't like your group, or get bored, its not that difficult to transition into working in another group or division. - comfortable place to work: Lexington campus has on-site gym, heath center, etc. - access to the MIT campus in Cambridge (libraries, events, clubs, etc.) - generous financial support for masters or PhD in a field that's closely related to your job - management supports you taking/auditing classes at MIT even during work time - all day shuttle from/to the Cambridge MIT campus - simplifies the compute.

Cons

- not many - unless you don't want to deal with the downsides of working on government-funded projects and/or defense projects requiring security clearances. These downsides can include - having complicated, unreasonable, messy requirements coming from the government - frustrating funding fights and constant worries about projects getting defunded by the government - not being able to talk about your work with people outside the Labs (if you're working on a defense project).

Pros

It can vary a lot from group to group, but in general, wonderful place with wonderful people and lots of interesting work going on. Excellent benefits and lots of flexibility to explore different projects.

Cons

Little opportunity for advancement in terms of rank and compensation once you reach technical staff. Additionally (again varies from group to group) expectations of what a staff member does can be unclear and there can be a light sink-or-swim nature to the work, again depending on the group you're in.

Pros

Historically a very stable job, interesting work, great people

Cons

There can be a lack of mentorship for people early in their careers, although your experience will depend heavily on which group you are in. There are only 3 main levels of engineer with very limited group leader positions, making upward mobility limited.
