Pros

Salary, free travel within the MTR network, and the total number of annual leave days are good compared to other companies. However, the medical benefits are acceptable but not as competitive as those offered by other public organizations.

Cons

There are many ad-hoc, unnecessary tasks assigned to fulfill the manager's requirements, which are unproductive and cause significant delays to your own work. Most importantly, these tasks are not even presented to management after all your hard work, and as a result, you may not be able to leave on time, even though you should be able to do so. As leaders, managers should understand the fundamentals of computing and how data operates across different systems. Certain workflow steps could greatly improve efficiency, but due to a lack of such knowledge, these improvements are not implemented. This forces subordinates to rely on outdated methods, such as manual copy and paste, instead of systematically retrieving data from various systems. As a result, a task that should take 10 to 15 minutes can end up taking one or two hours, causing unnecessary overtime and frustration for the team. There is also a lack of teamwork, with everyone working on their own tasks and minimal communication between teams and teammates. Sometimes, deadlines are set by the manager without clear reasoning, and staff are suddenly asked to finish tasks earlier than planned. This reflects poor time and staff management. Employees often work late because of these unnecessary tasks.

Pros

- big company - brand-name effect - accepts interns of all years I actually really enjoyed my experience and what I learnt. the environment is lax, yet employees are willing to help you learn. Part of the attractiveness of working in a big company is that their internship programs will be more established, and MTR delivered just that. My project experience was satisfying, and there was a strong sense of letting interns take ownership over their projects.

Cons

- bureaucratic - slow pace, stagnant (my manager had to wait 10 years for his promotion) - mean age is 35+ MTR has a monopoly over the metro services in Hong Kong. As such, there isn't a sense of always being better and better, but rather just keep doing what they have been doing all this time. As an intern, I found it hard to introduce new concepts, software and tools to the company.
