Pros
Higher than average salary for position/title. Laid back working environment, I quickly moved up the ranks. The un-corporate vibe of the office. If you are favored, then there is plenty chance for advancement. . Career advancement is quick from entry level assistant buyer to associate buyer. After that point, advancement slows down. This is due to the fact that many of the buyers have worked there for decades and don't plan on leaving. Therefore there aren't as many buyer positions open. Macys actively recruits diversity, however they have a tough time attracting men. Macy's East is a very exciting place to work
Cons
Uneducated employees, TOO many politics! Employee morale was extremely low and the mojority of the staff were actively looking for other jobs. Favoritism is a huge issue at this company. Senior management is lazy and sits around cruising the internet all day while everyone else works. The company has been struggling to meet sales goals for some time, 9/11 gave them the excuse to lower expectations (which they still missed). They are currently in the process of "re-branding" all of their stores to Macy's so soon there will be Lazurus-Macy's and then just Macy's. It is in an attempt to bring more shoppers in. They also tried, without much success, to make their stores more 'hip' like Abercrombie. With sales lagging they adopted the GE business model, which means that you will have to learn about six sigma, and how to pretend that you are saving money when you are losing it. Also, they are offshoring all development work leaving onshore "liasons" that will work with offshore personnel. The liasons will be here on visa's and supervised by the middle management that stays. Accepting a job here means looking for a new job in a couple of years.
