They staff to barely meet their needs, then reduce that number so everyone is stretched across their jobs. Busy season you may have 140 hours assigned for some weeks. Their clients are pretty much bottom of the barrel SEC clients, some with completely atrocious accounting functions which makes your job much more difficult. These clients are also passed between the non-Big 4 firms based on the fees charged so be ready to get a "new" client who was a former client, but now the budget is much lower. Since the clients are trash, the budgets are extremely low so realization is never hit. Honestly I would just not bother caring about realization if a partner brings it up because you have to work the hours you need to to do the work properly. MOST IMPORTANT, do not feel any obligation to work harder for them. You are a replaceable cog to them and they will fire you at the moment you are not useful to them. I made the mistake of working insane hours one busy season so I was burnt out after it. My bonus was the same as the prior busy season. There was no other acknowledgement that I worked many more hours than others on my level. Then when I wanted to take time off, I was canned since I would miss a 10-Q deadline period.
