Pros

Public sector benefits, interesting to see how local government functions

Cons

Lack of actual leadership in management. "With us or against us" attitudes creating "in crowds" and "out crowds." Decisions made at Sr. Leadership levels in a silo without consulting system experts leading to incidents and outages. Inability for leadership to admit error -- it's always someone else's fault. An HR department that's either unwilling to act, or does not have the authority to act, even when laws are actively being broken (data protections, public hiring rules and open competition, unfair labor practices). See, for example, SEIU 503 vs Marion County and the Employee Relations Board's ruling. Expect to be overworked, your professional expertise disregarded, and be bullied out the door if you ever question a decision by management. Even if you're also in leadership.

Commissioners are trying to negotiate a 0% cost of living increase for the next two years. Budget is reliant on tax dollars so it is always a fight to get the tools needed to do the work.
