Decent First Job, But Bad for Long Term - Software Support Analyst MatrixCare Employee Review

Pros

The culture at the company is pretty laid back, and it is a decent place to start with a first job in software. Holidays and other benefits are pretty good. Maternal and Paternal leave is quite good compared to other companies. Most (if not all) of the company allows for 100% work from home, which is nice. Starting pay is decent for what you could expect.

Cons

Mid-Level experience is poor at this company. Most senior employees have been there for a very long time, and many of them do not like to listen to younger or junior employees. Promotions yield a very small pay raise (often close to 5%), and annual raises are small (3-4%). Your wages will not grow well here over a long period of time. It feels like you either started there decades ago, or you will be looking for work shortly. Multiple promotions to other portions of the company have led to those positions being removed in layoffs as well. Too many good workers have promoted within the company and then been let go in under a year. Prior to COVID and work from home, the company was much better about promotions between departments, but since COVID that has happened less and less. Software at the company has a long list of defects and tech-debt. This was barely addressed in my time at the company, and new policies there are only making it worse. QA is overwhelmed and most of the problems with the software are found by customers, logged, and then never fixed. This causes a lot of stress for support as the company does not fix things that are broken unless the biggest customers complain about it. If the customer is medium to small sized, their concerns are largely ignored.

Fantastic career development opportunities. Teams consist of true critical thinkers and problem solvers, and industry leaders.

Cons

Somewhat unrealistic delivery timelines and intentional go-fever to deliver timely.

Pros

No commute to an office cubicle, remote work. Great industry.

Cons

Many, many, MANY people are quitting very suddenly, several without notice. Lots of upper management are leaving. Perhaps because the senior management wants to replace humans with AI, or outsource overseas. Or maybe it's because senior man is miserly with the purse strings and run departmentss off less than a skeleton crew, burn and churn their own employees to the point they have to quit without another job simply for their mental health, during a horrible job market! That's bad, very bad. It's obnoxiously apparent they're working towards laying off at least half if not entire teams. Those who jumped ship have left a wave of chaos for new management who obviously talk a big game but don't know the industry. Management really shouldn't talk trash about former employees to us but it happens. Management also shouldn't lie to our faces, but they do. It's condescending to think we're that stupid that we don't know what you're planning and that your lying. We're all eating popcorn watching departments self implode, and we raise a toast to our former coworkers who left abruptly. Trust, if we could do what they did, we would.
